A-Z BLOG CHALLENGE 2013

O is for Orangutan

Next to the panda, orangutans are my favourite type of wild animal. There is just something quite comical about them, the fact that they look so completely gormless and silly, and yet are actually one of the more intelligent creatures out there, able to use tools in much the same way that humans can. A funny story I heard from a mate once was that if you gave an orangutan a camera, they would take it apart, eat the most important part and then put it back together again. Probably why you don’t see a lot of orangutans working for camera shops!

A common party trick that I like to do at Christmas when the family are around (which I have to admit that I did kinda steal from Shaun of the Dead) is to pretend to be an orangutan and end up sitting around, pulling silly faces and picking things up and looking at them. Don’t ask me why – it’s just something that I do occasionally to make people laugh! The sad thing is that I’m usually stone cold sober when I do it! XD

Another reason why I like orangutans? You ever seen a baby orangutan? It’s one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I mean, look at this picture and tell me this little thing isn’t cute!

It does kinda upset me when I hear about the orangutan (or any wild animal for that matter) being threatened by humans ripping down their forests. I think, as they are the closest animal to human kind, we have a duty to protect these animals. Why? Because they’re primate! (My mate – primate, gettit? Ok, fine I’ll show myself out! Lol)

One final reason why I think orangutans are so awesome – my favourite character from Planet of the Apes was Dr. Zaius and he was an orangutan. But I think that was mainly due to the fact that, prior to watching the film, I had seen The Simpsons episode where they spoof the film – putting on a musical named Stop The Planet of the Apes. I want to get off! If you haven’t seen it, then check it out. It has one of the funniest songs ever written!

Thanks for reading guys and thanks again for Mysti for letting me take part! J

Dan is a huge fan of both Fantasy and Manga and has a style that combines both within his writing, which lets him tell stories that are both dramatic and tongue-in-cheek at the same time. His first novel, Trapped on Draconica, introduced readers to the world of Draconica and the many strange, yet loveable characters that lived there.

He picked up a love of Fantasy stories after reading The Lord of the Rings, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and numerous Roald Dahl novels. Occasionally, he has artwork to accompany his stories – adding a new level of depth to the stories.

Dan lives in Canterbury, UK and runs his own website, blog and even a wiki page that details the world of Draconica. He does book reviews on Read2Review and also on his own website. He has also written a short comic book strip called Queller, which was published in Lighting Strike Presents...

Authors who have inspired Dan are Douglas Adams, J.R.R Tolkien, Harlan Ellison, Alan Moore, Joss Whedon, H.P Lovecraft, George R.R Martin and Hiromu Arakawa.

  1. Yes, the orangutan is interesting. If the hair was shaved a bit, it could pass for human.

I like how you infuse your posts with humor. I kinda like the lion myself.

Good luck on your book tour.

  2. A-dorable. If only they stayed so cute when full grown. And weren't prone to attempting to overthrow the human race.
