Welcome to Unwritten's February blog event! Of course, this is the month of love, so I wanted to celebrate that theme as I've done in year's past. But this year, I've decided to add a scientific spin to it. All month long, talented authors from several genres will write about some aspect of love from their books as it relates to science. It could be social, psychological, biological, or anything in between. Our blog event is sponsored by "HMC by Kate", a fabulous independent jewelry crafter. Kate's giving away one of her very beautiful necklaces that I think fits our theme perfectly. She's also offering everyone who stops in a 10% discount on any item from her Etsy store. Be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post and check out her lovely offerings! Without further ado, please welcome our guest author:
The Science of Creating The Perfect Gargoyle
By Emma Paul
Gargoyles, Demons, and Vampires oh my! As an author of paranormal erotic romance,
research on the creatures of the supernatural is paramount. Well, “paramount”
may be a bit much, but it is an important part of writing a good Vampire novel,
or a Were-something novel and of course everything else in-between. Like
Gargoyles for instance.
So I sat down one day to write a Vampire novel.
Problem was, there were so many Vampire novels out there already. Oh, I got
it...I'll write a Demon novel, which would be better because I've delved into
tons of research on Demonology both mythological and in religion. However, as I
perused Amazon to see just how popular Demons were, I realized, that there were
a ton of Demon books too. Worse, all my
plot outlines for potential novels seemed to have been “done” a zillion times
over.
Now I'm discouraged. So I do the one thing that any
author in my shoes would do, I sit down with my six year old daughter, at the
time, and watch her favorite cartoon, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Hey
there were Gargoyles in that movie...friendly, heroic Gargoyles...hmmmm....
Yeah, I thought, Gargoyles are perfect. I sat down
that very night and began to draw up my character charts. After researching Gargoyles, I found that,
well they really weren't that spectacular. It was then that I realized that I
had to spice up the Gargoyle persona with some creative, fantastical, yet
believable characteristics.
As a rule, I like to keep character charts. Most of
these charts are made up of primary, secondary and antagonist characters whom
I've interwoven with my research on the supernatural and occult. I like to call them blank slates that I
eventually personalize with emotion and back stories.
Flipping through my charts I pulled out a few Vampire
and Demon “blank slates” and began to try and blend the traits of these two
different creatures together. My plan was to create a Gargoyle hero who had
certain vampire-like and demonic characteristics.
I wanted a Gargoyle who had the allure and sexiness of
a Vampire, with the magic/strength of a Demon. Blending the traits was
relatively easy for me. Still, I needed to explain why Gargoyles had such
similarities to Vampires and Demons.
That's when it hit me. Gargoyles are the offspring of
Vampires and Demons. Now that I had my Gargoyle drawn out, I began to work on
formulating an alternate historical reality, if you will, to explain why and
how Gargoyles came about. The perfect Gargoyle was born, and the first book I
ever published, got written...

strong, intelligent and dynamic."-- from a reviewer on Just Erotic
