"Elves, wizards, and hot romance!" ~Lyn Horner, authorof Darlin' Druid

“…I was completely surprised by how involved I became in the story. The fantastical world created by the author became very real to me and as a reader that is a very good thing.” ~ Wendy Mitchell, as posted on You Gotta Read Reviews

Once upon a time an elven noblewoman longed to leave her gilded cage. A half-breed former pirate wanted nothing more than to escape his guilty past. Easier said than done...
In the fantasy world of Tallenmere, the high elf, Caliphany Aranea, nearly a century old, has never been allowed to travel farther than a few miles out of the capital city of Leogard. Her father, Sirius, leads the Mage Academy, and after losing his only son, he expects Caliphany to take his place one day. The trouble is, she doesn't want to study magic and doubts she'll ever be as good a wizard as her father. She dreams of leaving Leogard to explore the world and strike out on her own--lofty goals for Sirius' daughter, who also happens to be King Leopold's niece.
When two brutes at Leogard Harbor attempt to kidnap her while she dreams of faraway lands, half-elf ship captain and ranger, Galadin Trudeaux, comes to her rescue. From their first chance encounter, to the finale, where Caliphany must decide where her heart truly lies, she and Galadin will face more adventure, more love, more heartache, than they ever thought possible. Through it all, they struggle to discover the power of forgiveness and of a love that stands the test of time.

 Excerpt from Chapter 12:
"Cap’n! You better come see this!”
Damn, that coffee smelled good. I set the cup down.“What is it?”
                “A stowaway, Cap’n.”
I followed him out, where Bob held a kicking, squirming woman. My jaw dropped. “Cali?”
“We found her below, Cap’n,” Shyler said.
“Let me go!” Cali yelled.”Your captain knows me; he’ll vouch for my innocence.”
Some more of the crew began gathering around to have a good laugh. Cali’s face glowed red, and I stepped toward them. Bob held her tightly, clasping her arms behind her.
I raised an eyebrow. “Well, you are a stowaway. Not exactly innocent, are you?”
Shyler snickered, his squinty eyes bouncing from me to Cali. “Looks like this one got attached to ya, Cap’n. You’ve never had ‘em sneakin’ aboard.”
Cali’s mouth fell open. “I am no such woman. Let me go!”
                “Let her go, Bob.”
He obeyed, and Cali stomped up to me, glaring me right in the eye. “Take me to Faewood!”
The crew laughed again. I had to join in that time.“Faewood? No, I think you’d best go back to where you belong. Shyler, turn about!”
                “We’ll be headed leeward, Cap’n.”
I kept my eyes on Cali. “We’ll have to sail against the wind, which will put us off schedule, but we don’t have much of a choice now, do we?”
Bob and some of the others ran to adjust the sails, while Shyler ran back to the helm.
Cali’s face filled with panic. “You can’t do that.”
“Oh, yes, I can. You don’t belong out here with aship full of sailors. I don’t know what you were thinking.”
She pinched her lips together and jutted her chinout. “I thought I would find some compassion, someone who could see my dilemma.”
My brow hardened. “What dilemma? What I see is awoman who’s bored with her comfortable life and decided to traipse off and find adventure. You’ll have to find someone else to provide your amusement.”
“That’s what you would see, wouldn't you? You don’t even know who I am.”
“Oh, yes, I do. I know you’re the king’s niece, and Iknow I’m taking you back home before we all hang.”
                “How did you find out?”
“It doesn’t matter. You’re going back, and that’s final.”
As the boat began to turn, it jerked portside. Cali stumbled, and I caught her. She felt good in my arms, until she wrenched herself away from me. Her blue eyes clouded with fury. She backed away to stand near the rigging. When she held her hand palm out, I watched a ball of fire appear, spinning like a cyclone.
I crept toward her and reached out one hand. “Cali, what are you doing?”
She stepped farther from me, her hand dangerouslyclose to the main mast. “You will take me to Faewood, or I will incinerate this entire ship.”
Some of my crew saw what was happening and began to run toward her. I threw up my hand to stop them. “Have you gone mad? What do you think you’ll do if the ship burns down? Swim? In case you didn’t notice,we’re a long way from shore.”
“I don’t care anymore. I’ll go down same as you.”
I stared at her, confused by my own emotions more than anything. On one hand, I was furious that she’d put me in this situation, but on the other, she seemed desperate. If the sea didn’t drown her, then hopelessness would. I growled and turned to where Shyler stood frozen by the wheel. He and some of the others had drawn their weapons.
“Return to our course,” I shouted to Shyler. “Head for Faewood.”
                “Aye, Cap’n.”
Cali lowered her hand. Bob sprang forward, but I caught his shirt. “Leave her be. I’ll escort her to my cabin. We’ll take her toFaewood and leave her there.”
Bob glared at me. He was about as wide as he was tall, and his usually jolly eyes flashed with fear. “This won’t look good forany of us, Cap’n.”
“I know. But, we were heading there anyway. I want all sails unfurled. The sooner we arrive, the better.”
Bob sheathed his sword. “Aye, Cap’n, but it’s unlucky, I tell you, having a woman on board.”
“Hopefully she won’t be with us long.”
I motioned toward my cabin, and Cali went in. She stood by the table, tapping her fingers. My coffee cup had slid off and laybroken on the floor. A stream of brown liquid ran under the table.
“Figures.” I bent to pick up the pieces. Cali fetched a towel.
                “Thank you,” she muttered.
As I tossed the broken ceramic in the trash, I asked,“Tell me, what is so god-awful bad about your life that made you want to hijack my ship?”
                Her chin quivered. “My father…”
Indignation got the best of me. I still smelled the coffee I hadn’t had a chance to drink. “Oh, that again. Yes, your father is a difficult man. So what? That’s what fathers are supposed to be like, with daughters like you, especially.”
She turned and buried her face in her hands. I felt like an ass. I grasped her shoulders. “I’m sorry.”
Given half the chance, I would have held her in my arms. Instead, she shot away and turned angry, wet eyes toward me. “Take me toFaewood and leave me alone!”
If I had met a more exasperating woman, I didn't remember it.
“Fine! But, you’ll stay put until we get there, you hear me?”
She turned her head away. “Yes. Just go.”
I left her in there, slamming the door behind me. Great. She’d hijacked my ship, kept me from enjoying my coffee, and now, she’dtaken over my cabin.
When I joined Shyler at the helm, he couldn’t hide his toothless grin.
                “What? “ I growled.
“This un’s got you round her finger, Cap’n, that’s what.”
                “Shut up and steer.”

A Review of "Echoes and Illusions" by Mila Ramos

Order HERE!
You may remember my interview I had with Mila Ramos HERE. This past week, I read Echoes and Illusions.  Here's my take on it:

Mila Ramos brings together the paranormal and speculative sides of romance in this four-story anthology. Each story benefits from strong, vivid characters who are anything but pushovers. Every set of couples has shared a history full of hurt and regret. However, Ms. Ramos employs an interesting twist in each of them that is delightfully unexpected.

My favorite story of the four would have to be The Watchers, which involves angelic beings sworn to protect life on earth. Fine world-building and hot romance kept me turning the pages on this one. Each story is short enough for a quick read before bedtime or a long lunch break.

On a downside, I stumbled over some poor editing, and I think the collection could have benefited from a couple more rounds of drafting to make both grammar and storytelling tighter. However, the stories' strengths kept me reading, and I know that Ms. Ramos possesses the potential for even bigger and better things! I look forward to seeing her in action again.

Things I Have Learned...

Yet another installment in the Things I Have Learned (sometimes the hard way) series.

Spread the word--just do it right!
1. Getting a book published is not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The work is just beginning, actually. Particularly if you are an unagented, self-pubbed, or indie author. It takes lots of man (or woman) hours to put your book out there were people can see it. It takes even more work to make them WANT to see it. And more work still to convince them to BUY it.

2. Marketing your book must be done prolifically but carefully. Please do not promote your book on websites/threads that do not allow author promotion. People DO NOT like this. Trust me. Join all the author/reader groups on sites like Goodreads/Amazon/Yahoo groups, etc. that you can, but strictly follow the rules! Some sites/threads allow for only certain types of promotions. Some for only certain genres on certain days. I know you're excited to tell the world about your book, but you must be diplomatic about it, or you'll be called a shameless self-promoter.
Criticism sucks. Hold back your inner
bulldog!

3. I think I've said this before, but please do not respond negatively to negative reviews. I've seen some REALLY ugly exchanges, and I've been tempted to comment on negative feedback myself. But, I remember those wicked incidents from authors gone berserk and kept my mouth (and fingers) from doing something stupid. Be thankful for someone that read and gave feedback, and ignore anything negative.

4. The publishing world is SLOW, but unpredictably so. You'll submit something for publication or review and you may hear back the next day or four months later. Waiting simply sucks. Resist the urge to nag. Wait a respectable time (I'm still not sure what that is--60 days maybe?) before you even think about touching base to see if your story was received or if someone's going to review it. In the meantime, content yourself with writing or editing. That's what all the fuss is about anyway, isn't it? Might as well improve your skills while you wait instead of staring at your inbox.

That's all for this installment of Things I Have Learned (sometimes the hard way). Until next time...

An Interview with Author Anna James, Take Two!

Buy it HERE!
I bet you guys were wondering what I'd done with the author interviews. Well, I'm happy to report that I've actually got some double takes scheduled. Yes indeedy.

Today, Ms. Anna James is back. You may remember her first interview with me HERE. She's just released a new erotic, contemporary, paranormal romance novella entitled Visions from Sugar and Spice Press. Click on the linky below the cover to order your copy.

***Anna will be giving away one .pdf of Visions to one lucky winner. Just leave a comment here with your email for a chance to win. I'll draw a winner next Monday!***

But first, let's get the scoop on this new release. Welcome back, Anna! Tell us about Visions. What's the story about?

Visions is a contemporary / paranormal romance novella. The story revolves around Prudence Baily who has just learned that the woman she has always believed to be her mother is, in fact, a distant relative who adopted her when she was four years old after her father had brutally murdered her mother then killed himself.

Shortly after learning the truth Pru experiences a reoccurring nightmare in which a woman is brutally murdered. Is she experiencing a vision or reliving the past? She has no memories of her early childhood but instinct tells her she must to return to Salem, Massachusetts, her birth place, to solve the mystery.

Almost immediately upon her return she meets Detective Matt Cavanaugh, her neighbor. Matt is gorgeous and sexy and Pru is instantly attracted to him. Matt is also linked to her past. His father, now a retired police officer, was first on the scene the night of her parents’ deaths.

Pru soon realizes that the circumstances surrounding her parents’ deaths are not as they seem. The facts don’t add up. And when a recent murder that Matt is investigating is linked to the past they discover that Pru is right and the killer is still on the loose.

Will they discover the killer’s identity in time or will history repeat itself?

I love paranormal stuff, but I've never really had any personal experiences in it. Do you believe in and have you ever experienced anything paranormal like the heroine in this story?

I've never really had a paranormal experience but I can say that sometimes I get these feelings, like I wake up in the morning and I feel that something really good is going to happen and low and behold it does!

Since this is your second time here, I'm going to be naughty and throw more random questions at you. Get your mitt. Let's go!

What is your favourite TV show of all time, one you can watch it over and over again and quote lines from?

That one is easy, it's Charmed.

What did you want to be when you were little and did you imagine you'd be doing what you're doing now?

I think I wanted to be an actress when I was a kid. As for imagining what I'm doing now, when I was in high school I did want to go into Communications, it's kind of like marketing, which is what I do now. What I can tell you is I never imagined myself as a writer until about ten years ago. I hated reading when I was younger but now I love it.

The first thing that Anna does when she wakes up is.....?

Let my new puppy out of his crate and take him outside. Then he eats breakfast and we go for a walk. Coffee doesn't usually happen until I get to work.

The floor of your bedroom closet is covered with....?

Shoes, shoes and oh, did I mention shoes?

Telemarketers--do you talk to them or hang up promptly?

I do my best to be polite but if they keep on going after I've said no then I hang up.

Who's your favorite Muppet?

Miss Piggy! She's too funny.

Phew, those were fun! Let's get back to business and whet your readers' appetites with a lovely excerpt from Visions.

Prologue

Sweat trickled down the sides of her face. Her eyes were huge with fear and tremors racked her body. “No! Please don’t.” Prudence Bailey could hear the terror in the woman’s voice as she begged for her life. Someone came toward the woman; he was holding a knife. Or was it a she? Pru couldn’t tell from this angle. She saw the woman’s arms shoot up to try and ward off her attacker. It was a futile attempt. He overpowered her easily. Then it happened. The knife plunged deep into her chest. The screams were terrifying. She saw the woman crumple but it wasn’t over. The knife plunged into the woman again and again. Finally, the screaming stopped.

Pru shot straight up in bed. She too was drenched with sweat and her body shook with fear. This was the third night this week that she’d had the nightmare. It was the same each time. She pulled the blankets aside and got out of bed. Why is this happening to me? she wondered as she went down the stairs to double check that the windows and doors were locked. She didn’t know but she was sure as hell going to find out.

Thank you very much for reappearing on Unwritten, Anna.  I hope to see even more of you very soon and I wish you much success!

***Remember to comment with your email addy (like mystiparker (at) yahoo (dot) com) for a chance to win a .pdf of Visions. Drawing next Monday!***

Can You Promote Too Much?

Being a new author is exciting, but challenging. Once you have the story finished and published, if you're an unagented author and not published by a big house, most of the marketing is up to you. It's long, hard, sweaty work. Well not so much sweaty, but my butt gets tired sitting here working on promotion.

Anywho, let's talk promotion authors and readers. First, as a reader--what sort of promotions do you like to see when it comes to books? What gets your attention?

Examples: Giveaways, Book Trailers, Book Covers, Blurbs, Excerpts, Reviews, Interviews, Signings, etc.

Authors, what are some successful marketing tactics you've come across?

And one more question: Are there any promoting behaviors that annoy you? The floor is open. Let the discussions begin.

Did you know that today (June 12) is Red Rose Day? HolidayInsights.com says:
"Red Rose Day is a time to enjoy and appreciate America's favorite flower.....the red rose. A red rose signifies love. A June setting for Red Rose Day is very appropriate, as this is by far the most popular month for weddings. And, they are in bloom in the gardens across America this month.
In addition to being the most popular cut flower, roses are also the most popular flower in flower beds and around foundation of houses, garages and sheds. They are easy to grow, producing a bounty of sweet scented flowers from June up to the first frost.

Did you know? Each rose color sends a different meaning to the recipient. Make sure you send the right message. Rose colors and their meaning"

This summer, expect new author interviews, giveaways, and whatever else my mind can cook up. Between staying busy with my three kiddos this summer, I'm writing as much as possible. Book 2 of the Tallenmere series, Serenya's Song, should be out to you by April, 2012.

Here's a little teaser from Chapter 13 of my current draft. Jayden's moved on to Summerwind, hoping to leave his painful past behind. Will he ever find true love? Serenya Crowe seems like his perfect match in every way, but as fate would have it, she's married to the Earl of Summerwind...

He broke away from our kiss, trying to catch his breath. “Serenya, we can’t do this.”
While his fingers encircled my wrists, I stared into the sapphire depths of his eyes. All I saw was complete and utter tenderness—in his eyes, in his hands as they restrained mine, in the way he had held me like the I was the most precious thing in the world.
My breath came in quick gasps, as I realized how completely un-tender my own behavior had just been. I jerked myself from his grasp and stepped back.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered and sped behind him, retrieved my gloves from the ground, and slipped them back on.
As I hurried to Charity and put my foot in the stirrup, Jayden said, “No, I’m the one who should apologize. It will not happen again.”
I climbed into the saddle and said nothing. A world of regret and shame settled on his face before he slowly turned and mounted his own horse. How could I explain to him that I wanted it to happen again? More than that—that I wanted him, all of him. And that his tenderness, his restraint, had meant more to me than he’d ever know?

Book Description:

The desolate streets of downtown Pittsburgh are a constant reminder of the missile attack that forever changed the lives of the surviving scientists and students hidden inside the fallout shelter of Helmsby's Genetic Research Center.  Believing themselves to be the only survivors, they reside inside the research center until their food supplies near depletion.  Thinking the fallout has lessened, they emerge three years later to discover strange creatures patrolling the streets in search of human flesh and blood.  The creatures possess the ability to shift their genomes and alter their appearances by realigning their genetic sequences.  Although they have no conclusive evidence to prove the creatures’ origin, Dr. Helmsby—a renowned genetics genius—believes the shifters escaped from TransGenCorp, a scientific laboratory suspected of manufacturing clones and other genetic atrocities.

Daniel Hutchinson, their leader, teams with Lucas Ridale to comb the streets and search for provisions.   To cover more area, they head out opposite directions and scavenge downtown Pittsburgh.  They also hope to find other survivors.  But Daniel uncovers mysteries more frightening than the shifters.  He discovers the tip of Pittsburgh has been fenced off from the rest of the area.  Low-flying helicopters observe the streets, making him ponder the question: Were the shifters released as simply part of a military experiment with humans being their prey?
